Case File #004 — COVID origins

You could be banned from the internet for saying what the FBI now says

The scientists who told the public a lab origin was implausible had privately written, days earlier, that parts of the virus looked engineered. Nobody who enforced the ban has ever explained themselves. The origin of the virus remains genuinely unresolved — the handling of the question does not.

I. What is not in dispute

II. The red flags

01The private view and the public view were opposites

"Potentially look engineered" in an email in January; "we do not believe any laboratory-based scenario is plausible" in a paper weeks later.[1][2] Scientists are allowed to change their minds as evidence arrives — that is the job. But a reversal that fast, from that few people, that became that load-bearing for global censorship policy, is owed a public accounting it has never received.

02The people who might be responsible were the ones consulted

US funding flowed to EcoHealth Alliance and onward to coronavirus work involving the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Officials with an institutional stake in the answer were central to shaping the assessment of the question. That's not a conspiracy theory — it's the definition of a conflict of interest, and it was handled as though it were a formality.[5]

03"Misinformation" turned out to mean "not yet approved"

People lost accounts, jobs and standing for stating a hypothesis that three US agencies now consider the more likely one.[3][4] No apology, no reinstatement, no review of how the category was applied. The lesson institutions took was that the ban was a bit premature. The lesson the public took was that the category means whatever is convenient.

04The notebooks were never produced

The debarment of EcoHealth rests partly on failure to provide WIV laboratory notebooks and delayed reporting of experimental results.[5] Missing primary records are the reason this cannot be resolved. The absence of evidence here is not neutral — somebody's failure to hand it over produced it.

05Nobody who enforced the consensus paid a price

The correction was absorbed silently. No agency reviewed its role, no platform audited its takedowns. If being catastrophically wrong on the most consequential factual question of the decade costs nothing, then the next confident consensus carries exactly as much weight as this one did.

III. The honest counterargument

What the other side says — and this is the strongest counterargument on this website

Read the agency assessments carefully: DOE and CIA both hold their lab-leak view with low confidence, and other US intelligence bodies still favour natural spillover. This is not a settled question that was proven and suppressed — it is an unresolved question where informed people disagree. Several serious peer-reviewed analyses of early Wuhan case clustering point toward the Huanan seafood market, and natural spillover remains how essentially every previous pandemic began, SARS and MERS included.

Andersen's reversal has a mundane explanation he has given publicly and repeatedly: the January email was a first impression on a novel genome, and closer analysis of the furin cleavage site and receptor binding domain changed his view within weeks. Scientists updating fast during an emerging pandemic is the process working, not a cover-up. And in early 2020, with a novel pathogen killing people and harassment of Chinese and Chinese-American communities spiking, platforms had real reasons to be cautious about unverified claims of engineered origin.

We take that seriously, and this case file is graded lower than the others because of it. But the counterargument defends the science, not the conduct. It does not justify treating an open question as a settled one, banning people for landing on the side three agencies later took, or letting the parties with funding exposure help referee the inquiry.

IV. The question

We do not know where COVID-19 came from. Neither does the FBI, the CIA, the Department of Energy, or anyone reading this — that is exactly the point, and anyone claiming certainty in either direction is selling something.

What we know is that a question with no settled answer was declared answered; that people were punished for holding the position the state's own agencies later adopted; that the primary records needed to resolve it were never handed over; and that not one institution which got it wrong has explained how.

The insult isn't that they didn't know. Nobody knew. The insult is that they told us they knew, punished us for doubting, quietly changed their minds, and never mentioned it again.
